Luxembourg Prime Minister, Minister of State, Xavier Bettel, has sent a message of condolences to the US President Barack Obama in the wake of the shooting perpetrated by US citizen Omar Mateen in an LGBT nighclub in Orlando, Florida in the early hours of Sunday 12 June 2016.

49 people were killed by the gunman, who has been identified as American-born with Afghan heritage. Since the incident, President Obama and the head of the FBI have confirmed that Mateen was a Daech sympathiser who was radicalised over the internet.

Xavier Bettel has now joined others in condemning "this act of terror and hatred", expressing his sincere condolences on behalf of the Luxembourg Government to the American people and the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to the many wounded.
